A Very Turnips December: Celebrating the Best of Winter

When people talk about a Winter Wonderland, they’re usually thinking of fairy lights, frosty mornings, and maybe the odd snowflake or two. And yes, Borough Market does look rather magical this time of year- our 12ft Christmas tree is standing proud, and the arches are dressed in twinkling festive charm.

But here at Turnips, the real magic is always in the produce.

The Flavours of the Season

Pay our stall a visit this December and you’ll quickly see what we mean. Think towering Brussels Sprout stalks, just as nature intended. Knobbly, fragrant Chervil Roots. Agria Potatoes fresh from Cambridgeshire’s rich soil. Then there are the Tout Miel Clementines from Corsica, tumbling down the display in all their golden glory – besides the ever-crisp Vassout Apples and Pears.

These are the classics that make the festive season and this month, we’re celebrating them in full.

Introducing our classic line up. These are the ingredients our chefs and regulars love most – not because they’re new or groundbreaking

  • Agria Potatoes – earthy, floury, the dream for crisp roasties
  • Brussels Sprout Sticks – sweeter and more flavourful straight from the stalk
  • Sandy Carrots from Brittany – grown in coastal sand, for unmatched sweetness
  • Tout Miel Clementines – honeyed and aromatic, fresh from Corsican groves
  • Vassout Apples & Pears – perfectly grown in the Loire Valley, juicy and bright

Excellence Over Novelty

We’ve never believed in following trends for the sake of it. Instead, we choose to work with growers who are the best at what they do—people who understand flavour, seasonality, and care for their land. That’s how we’re able to offer you not just a carrot or an apple, but the very best version of it.

Take our Sandy Carrots, grown along the windswept coast of Brittany. The sandy soil not only shapes their look, it transforms their flavour—giving them a rich, natural sweetness that’s unlike anything you’ll find in a supermarket. Just give them a good scrub and roast away.

Of course, if you’re after something a bit more adventurous for your festive table, we’ve stocked a select but exceptional range of rare and seasonal treasures:

Rare Finds & Chef’s Favourites

  • Vietnamese Passion Fruit (Philibon)
  • White Truffle & Black Winter Truffle
  • La Réunion Leafy Lychee (Philibon)
  • Cevennes & Roscoff Onions
  • Girolle, Yellow Leg Chanterelle & Cep Mushrooms

These ingredients are loved by chefs for their depth, aroma, and impact—whether you’re making a showstopping starter or jazzing up a Christmas cheese board.

As our co-founder Fred says:
“I don’t believe in mediocrity—and that includes in food.”
